NFL Quarterly Report Part 1

In the blink of an eye, we are a quarter of the way through the NFL season. Its been a great start, and today, I'm going to take a look at some of the biggest surprises and biggest disappointments of the young season so far. Here we go. Starting with the 5 teams that have surprised me the most in a good way this year.

5. Detroit Lions- While this team is 0-4, anyone with two eyes, a brain, and no affiliation with the NFL referee's association knows that Calvin Johnson had a TD in week 1 and this team should have a win. Unlike last year, they are playing tough, barely losing to both Philly and Green Bay. This is a very young and talented offense. I'm not predicting super bowl anytime soon, but so far I've been impressed by their solid play. Big improvement over last year.

4. Chicago Bears- With one of the worst games I have ever seen a team play, the Bears dropped from my #1 team all the way to 4. Despite that setback, you can't help but be impressed by the huge strides this team has taken, culminated by their victory over the NFC favorite Green Bay Packers. Lets just hope for their sake that the game against the giants was but a mere blip on the radar.

3. Washington Redskins-This team is a gigantic collapse at home against the Texans away from being 3-1, and Donovan Mcnabb is the reason. McNabb is showing everyone that he is not done yet, and this team is thriving despite all the drama behind Albert Haynesworth. We will have to see if they can hold up in this packed and tough division.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers- When Big Ben got suspended for 4 games, all of the stories were would the Steelers survive without him. When you looked at their schedule in week 1, you thought 2-2 would be a huge victory for them. Well they did that and then some, as they are just a Joe Flacco 4th quarter drive from being 4-0. And who else can you give credit to besides Troy Polamalu. The fact that this man has yet to win a defensive MVP award just baffles me. There is no single player on the defensive side that affects his team more. Here's hoping he finally gets his hardware.

1. Kansas City Chiefs- In a season that is diverse as ever, there is only one undefeated team left in the league. No its not the Colts, the Saints, or the Packers. Ladies and gentlemen, its the Kansas City Chiefs. And this team is no fluke. They showed that their upset win over the Chargers was but a sign of things to come, as they went out and beat the Browns, then destroyed the 49ers. Will they keep it up into the playoffs. Perhaps. This division is so weak that there are at least 3-4 easy wins out there for them. We will have to wait and see.

Now I'm moving on to the 5 most disappointing teams so far this year.

5. New Orleans Saints- Call me a harsh critic. I mean when you think about it, this team really should be 4-0. And even though they are 3-1, they have played poorly enough at times to lose all 4 of their games. To barely beat a slumping Vikings team, and a terrible 49ers and Panthers team, is simply unacceptable if you are the defending champs. I know that Payton, Brees and company will gladly take 3-1, but they have to play much better if they want to think about making it to Dallas in February.

4. Cincinnati Bengals- When this team added a threat like Terrell Owens, there were whispers in Cincy of a possible super bowl run. And rightfully so. But then the Bengals came out and laid a goose egg against the Patriots. They followed that up with a great win against Baltimore, and a solid win against Carolina, before laying another goose egg. They go into Cleveland and come out a loser, and in a division as tough as theirs, that is unacceptable. Carson Palmer has struggled, Cedric Benson is not making plays, and you can just tell that TO is waiting to go off to the media. This team has one more cupcake this week against Tampa before they hit the meat of their schedule, and it does not look good for them

3. Dallas Cowboys- The Cowboys would be higher on this list were it not for the solid play of their first two opponents. They played awful against Washington in week 1, and yet still arguably could have, or should have, won the game. Then a Bears loss looked terrible before they went out and beat the Packers on Monday Night. But all was not lost as they handed the very impressive Texans their first loss of the year. I still like this team to make the playoffs, but when you are talking super bowl in the preseason, a 1-2 start is simply unacceptable.

2. Minnesota Vikings- This team was thought to be lost when Favre retired for the 47th time. When he came back, they were assumed to be NFC champs. But Brett Favre for once has shown his age this year, and were it not for a guy named Adrian Peterson, this would be arguably the worst offense in the league. They are severely missing their big play guy Sindey Rice, and they need him badly. Their next 4 games: at Jets, vs. Cowboys, at Packers, at Patriots. Looks like 1-6 is a very likely possibility.

1. San Francisco 49ers- I've been racking my brain to come up with a team that has stunk it up this badly with high expectations on them in any sport, let alone football, and not much has come to mind. Not only are the 49ers winless, they have looked downright awful doing it. They got destroyed by the Seahawks and the Chiefs, and blew a 14 point 1st quarter lead against the Falcons. Here is the crazy part. Despite being 0-4, they are only 2 games out of this division which I think has to go down in record as one of the worst division in a year in NFL history. Seriously 8-8 is going to run away with this division. The 49ers will have one more tough game against Philly before a 5 game stretch where their toughest opponent will be the Broncos. But they will probably find a way to screw it up.

Tomorrow I will be taking a look at some of the most surprising and disappointing players so far this year. Thanks for reading.
